Women in the late 1800's had very few rights. All around the world they were regarded as weak and inferior to men. Even in America, the land of the free, women weren't equal. While the American women's rights movement was started around 1840, the equal inheritance rights in Norway were passed in 1854. At the same time in Massachusetts in the USA married women were granted separate economy and legal majority. For the most part, women were expected to keep the house clean and decorated and care for the children.
